Ernst Neumann – Celebrations
On 22 March 2018, the Berlin Medical Society and on 20.April – 21, April 2018 the Kant-University of Kaliningrad commemorated the first description of the blood stem cell 150 years ago at the Pathological Institute of the Albertus University of Königsberg (now Kaliningrad) by Ernst Christian Neumann (1834 – 1918).
Today, the pluripotent haematopoietic stem cell is at the centre of exponentially growing research in immunology and oncology.

On 17.06. 2011, the Berlin Medical society (Berliner Medizinische Gesellschaft) and the Deutsche Gesellschaf für Hämatologie and Onkologie celebrated a Jubilee: 100 years ago, the pluripotent blood stem cell, which was first described in 1868 as a „lymphoid marrow cell“, was internationally recognised as a „Großlymphozytäre Stammzelle „.
As written on another page, Neumann postulated a common stem cell for all hematopoietic cells, which was named in 1868 „Lymphoide Markzelle“ (large lymphoid cell bone marrow)
